While the holidays may still be months away, “Christmas in July” is the perfect excuse to revisit one of our favorite creative projects from last year. More than a holiday gift, the 2025 “Bay Bus” became a showcase of what’s possible when the talented teams across Bay Cities come together to create something memorable.
At Bay Cities, our annual holiday gifts have become much more than seasonal traditions. They’re an opportunity to push creative boundaries, explore new structural concepts, test innovative packaging ideas, and demonstrate what’s possible when talented designers, engineers, manufacturers, and production teams collaborate toward a common goal.
What started as a simple sketch became a fully functional, sustainable wireless charging station housed inside a custom-designed corrugated VW-inspired bus—showcasing the very same creative thinking and integrated capabilities we bring to our clients’ packaging and retail display programs every day.

Every Great Design Begins with a Story
For Bay Cities Creative Director Allan Yue, the Bay Bus represented something much bigger than a nostalgic vehicle.
It represented a journey.
Building on the popularity of Bay Cities’ Bay Bus-inspired 2023 holiday gift design, Allan envisioned a new version that was more dimensional, more functional, and more meaningful. The concept reflected Bay Cities’ own growth as the company continues expanding its national footprint—from California to Bentonville, and now Cincinnati.
“The background is about a journey,” Allan explained. “We’re going from West to East.”
That story became the foundation for everything that followed.
Sketch to Structure
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is how closely Allan’s original concept sketch resembled the finished product.
Bay Cities Structural Designer Rick Eldridge immediately recognized the strength of the vision.
“The idea came to me fully formed directly from the talented Allan Yue… I got to work out the structure assembly, but this was my introduction to it. Isn’t it amazing how, in Allan’s original sketch, he already had the final idea so close? Allan worked with me every step of the way.”
Turning that vision into a structure required countless refinements.
The Bay Bus evolved from a simpler box into a highly dimensional package featuring carefully engineered angles, hidden compartments, and integrated functionality—all while maintaining structural integrity.
This iterative process mirrors how Bay Cities approaches every customer project. Great packaging isn’t created in a single draft. It evolves through collaboration, testing, and continuous refinement.

Good Design Never Stops Evolving
One of Allan’s core design philosophies surfaced repeatedly throughout the project.
Ideas evolve.
As the team refined the Bay Bus, every decision was intentional—from the shape of the vehicle to the placement of the charging components.
Originally, the charging cord exited from the back of the bus.
Then someone asked:
“What if it came out from the side instead? Like an EV charging port!”
The result felt natural instead of added on.
As Allan explained, the goal wasn’t simply to add electronics to packaging. It was to seamlessly blend the electronic components into the corrugated structure so they became part of the design itself.
That’s the kind of thinking that turns functional packaging into memorable brand experiences.

Collaboration Drives Innovation
Great design is always a team effort.
The Bay Bus brought together experts across Bay Cities, including:
- Creative Direction
- Structural Design
- Graphic Design
- Digital Print
- Manufacturing
- Packout & Fulfillment
- Project Management
Along the way, the project continued to improve thanks to contributions from multiple team members.
Reflecting on the project, Rick shared:
“The whole project is a testament to how effective the Bay Cities team is at executing and shipping amazing things.”
This cross-functional collaboration is exactly how Bay Cities delivers successful packaging, displays, and retail programs for brands nationwide.
Packaging That Keeps Giving
Our annual holiday gifts aren’t designed to sit on a shelf.
They’re designed to be used.
Bay Cities Creative Brand Manager Ryan explained the team’s objective:
“We wanted to create a gift that can be used and enjoyed all year round. Graphics and colors were chosen to convey our core values and support the Bay Cities brand and vibe. Graphic detail successfully demonstrates our digital print capabilities.”
That philosophy influenced every aspect of the Bay Bus.
Inside the corrugated vehicle sits an APOLLO wireless charging kit, hidden beneath a playful gas-tank/EV charging door. The charger itself is made with recycled silicone and post-consumer materials, while the packaging showcases Bay Cities’ corrugate, produced with up to 99% post-consumer recycled content and designed to be 100% recyclable. Even the shipper reflects Bay Cities’ commitment to responsibly sourced materials and closed-loop manufacturing.
The result is more than promotional packaging.
It’s an everyday product that recipients continue using long after the holidays.
More Than Packaging—A Demonstration of Bay Cities’ Capabilities
Projects like the Bay Bus Charging Station follow the same collaborative, end-to-end process we bring to our clients’ packaging and retail display programs every day, including:
- Custom structural packaging design
- Graphic design and branding
- Digital printing
- Sustainable packaging solutions
- Prototype development
- Manufacturing
- Packout and fulfillment
- National logistics support
Every annual holiday project becomes an opportunity to innovate, refine processes, and demonstrate what’s possible when all of these capabilities work together under one roof.
The Best Feedback Came After Delivery
The greatest measure of success wasn’t what our team thought.
It was what our customers said.
After receiving the Bay Bus Charging Station, clients shared comments like:
“It might be the coolest one yet.”
“Your designs are second to none.”
“The coolest, most unique gift I have ever received.”
“It’s sitting atop my desk and will be used daily.”
“One of the best easily.”
Those responses reinforced exactly what we hoped to achieve: create something memorable, functional, and worthy of becoming part of our customers’ everyday workspace.
Bringing Big Ideas to Life
Whether we’re designing a holiday gift, a retail display, custom packaging, an e-commerce solution, or a national promotional program, the process remains the same.
It starts with curiosity.
It grows through collaboration.
It evolves through thoughtful design.
And it ends with something people remember.
That’s the journey behind the Bay Bus Charging Station.
And it’s the same journey we take with every customer project.
